關於專輯【四字成語】：
即興音樂本身具備不定性與冒險的精神。
卡到音即興樂團的首張專輯【四字成語】，是一部用聽的故事集，英文專輯名為Four Characters，說明了截然不同的四名樂手、四項樂器，卻巧妙地交織融合，共譜樂音，揮灑創意。character一字指涉具體的人物、字元，更甚延伸至無形的性格、特質之意。成語亦有隱喻、象徵等多重詮釋的可能，為求專輯內容呈現豐富多樣性，我們以非制式而開放的書寫方式，不去定義和解釋每首樂曲該成語的意思，而是邀請不同領域的藝術家來作答或提供其想像。然而，任何人都能擁有自己最獨特的解讀方式，雖說音樂抽象，卻也直接的表露，是無限的幻想。我常認為好的即興音樂往往可遇不可求，更需要天時、地利、人和，顯得珍貴。那發生於當下的瞬間樂思，無法全然複製，也唯有透過錄音的留存才能再次聆聽及審視。最後，祝大家聆聽愉快，bon écoute!

About the album “Four Characters”:
Ka Dao Yin s first CD is titled "Four Characters". There is a double meaning to this: Each piece carries the name of a Chinese proverb of four Chinese characters, and the group itself is a quartet of four, improvising at the junction of Chinese and Western music.
All pieces are titled with so-called cheng yu, colloquial Chinese idioms consisting of a set of four characters. Cheng yu are widespread and in common use, they depict the essence of a life situation or an emotional state in a metaphorical or poetic way. Interpretations are differing considerably, and translating them is not an easy task. Their ambiguity may be one of the reasons for their unbroken popularity among Chinese speakers.
For recording this CD, the band members did not get too caught up in musical theory: A certain "cheng yu" was chosen as the general mood for an improvisation, and the pieces were structured along simple musical parameters, i.e. a certain tempo or rhythm, contrasting dynamics, or a combination of instruments playing together or against each other. After the recording session (which only took the time of one short afternoon), the group had peers from the art and music field in Taiwan listen to the music, and later on asked them for their interpretations of the cheng yu included here. The questions were: "What does this idiom mean to you?" "What do you see in it?" "In which situation would you use it?" The answers to these questions are the texts printed in this booklet.
Let s hope the results are as diverse and intriguing as the harmonic and disharmonic textures and soundscapes created by the four musicians of Ka Dao Yin improvising along the given moods of Chinese four-character idioms.
