Artist Introduction:Giyu Tjuljaviya
_____________________________________
giyu is recognized for his gentle image as a folk song singer-songwriter. His debut EP, The Seemingly, showcased a blend of pop, blues, and ballad styles. In 2019, he released his second EP, SPIKY, which adopted a more intense rock style and delved deeper into the autocratic history of Taiwan, self-reflection in a capitalistic society, and with his sophisticated lyrics and down-to-earth vocals, giyu brings the sadness and anger in his eyes towards modern society to the audience s ears.
Growing up between urban life and his indigenous homeland, giyu gradually pieced together his family s history in recent years through a journey of cultural learning and rediscovery. As he reconnected with his roots, he began creating music grounded in the weight and identity of being Paiwan. In recent years, giyu has won both the PASIWALI Music Award and the Taiwan Music Composition and Songwriting Contest for his work. Blending his earlier styles with a renewed cultural voice, he is forging a unique musical path. Through his personal experiences, he explores contemporary indigenous issues — identity, language loss, migration — and weaves them into songs that seem to carry the landscapes they have passed through. His first full-length album in the Paiwan language, The Wind That Found Me, features a more grounded and conversational low vocal tone. He describes the hometown scenery and character sketches from his memories, finding the pieces of his multi-ethnic and indigenous self-identity.
