Ehse is proud to announce the arrival of Six Improvisations , the debut tape by Baltimore-based keyboardist and composer Liz Durette. 2013 began a series of electrifying performances, with Liz galvanizing new song forms of tonal intimacy and profound technical expansion. Having adopted a Rhodes electric piano as her instrument in this period, live outings found local venues submerged in near-total environments of physical sound swell.
Six Improvisations captures all of the excitement of Liz s live excursions, while offering what might be more private expressions from an enclosed studio environment. Captured in but a few evenings, we find Liz exploring heights of spiritual wander, spectral ecstasy, tension and release, abandoning this reality for myriad others, yet never relinquishing command of the keys.
Flowing from one structural invention to another, clouds of sustain crackle, twinkling rhythms jump and skitter about, melodies flow. Modern pastorals, cerebral invocations, sure-handed melodic puzzles that resolve, implode, dissolve, and in some instances cease to exist. Moods are often folded in on themselves, further and further articulating the dimensions of some obscure sound Liz pulls out of her imagination.
